Congo: Rwanda returns to Economic Community of Central African States after 7 years

The Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo, Tuesday announced the return of her country to the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), a sub-regional organization it left in 2007 because of its inability to make financial contribution.

“Rwanda is now stabilized and ready to contribute to the ECCAS. We are very far from the tragedy of the 1994 genocide,”said Mrs. Mushikiwabo who was invited to attend a military exercise of troops from eight ECCAS countries.

The military maneuver took place in Loango, a village on the edge of the Atlantic, located 15 kilometers from Pointe-Noire, the main economic and industrial centre of Congo.

The minister announced that her country will be reintegrated into ECCAS during its next summit.

Rwanda withdrew from ECCAS to devote its resources to the reconstruction of the country, devastated by the 1994 genocide.
