Dutch airline, KLM, resumes flight to Zimbabwe

Dutch airline, KLM, announced Wednesday it would resume flights to Zimbabwe in October, a route it abandoned in 1999 after business nosedived.

In a statement, the airline said it would fly directly into Harare International Airport from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport three times a week.

It said it would operate an Airbus A330-200 on the route, which on some days would be linked to Lusaka, Zambia.

KLM said the re-introduction of the Amsterdam-Harare route was part of its planned growth in Africa, and in recognition of the improving economic situation in Zimbabwe.

“KLM sees growth opportunities in Africa. This year, we launched service to Luanda in Angola and Lusaka in Zambia and in 2011 we began serving Kigali in Rwanda,” the airline said

KLM abandoned the Harare route in 1999 at the start of the country’s political and economic instability.
