Ghana navy arrests vessel with stolen Nigerian oil

The Ghana Navy has arested an oil tanker with stolen oil from an oilfield in Nigeria, the Ghana Armed Forces announced on Saturday.

MV Madina attempted to discharge the stolen crude oil from Nigeria into another vessel at the Saltpond Offshore Producing Company Limited (SPOCL) in Ghana’s Central Region.

The Director of Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces, Colonel M’Bawine Atintande, said the vessel was arrested on Thursday following a tipoff from their Nigerian counterparts.

Mr Quincy Sintim Aboagye, Chief Executive Officer of SPOCL, who had earlier received information about the stolen crude oil from the owners, directed that the vessel be prevented from escaping until the Ghana Navy ships arrived.

The Ghana News Agency reported that the owners of the vessel said it was engaged to lift crude oil from a marginal oilfield in Nigeria into a bigger vessel, MV North Wind Grace, but the Captain and the crew conspired to hijack it.

The owners said they began to trace the vessel and alerted the Benin and Ghanaian security.
