Libyan Speaker hails interior ministry’s efforts to guarantee security

The Speaker of Libya’s parliament, Mohamed al-Megrayef, has hailed the efforts of the Home Affairs ministry to flush armed groups out of the country.

He also pledged to establish a committee to probe attacks targeting the National Congress and his car in which one occupant was injured.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday announced the establishment of a joint task force in collaboration with the army to secure areas currently occupied by armed groups acting outside state authority.

Al-Magrayef, who was addressing the press in Tripoli late on Saturday, recalled the attacks which targeted him and the Congress and restated his determination to continue his work.

He said he was currently looking for a venue where they could hold their meetings following the occupation of the Congress by injured ex-rebels.

He said the assailants had insulted MPs while threatening them with weapons. He also deplored the lack of respect the assailants showed to female MPs which, according to him, was contrary to the long established tradition and customs of the country.

“But thanks to God and calm of the Congress members, we have succeeded in avoiding a bloodshed,” the Speaker said.

He expressed his determination not let any group threaten him or members of the Congress who are democratically elected by the Libyan people.
