Lowest paid Mauritanian worker to earn US$ 108 from September

The Mauritanian government has fixed the minimum wage for its workers at US$ 108 (about 30,000 Ouguiya), an increase of 42% from the previous figure of US$ 75 (about 21,000), PANA learnt Tuesday from official sources.

The new minimum wage, which will take effect from 1 September, followed an agreement signed Monday by the government, the National Council of Employers (CNP) and 17 workers’ unions.

Under the agreement, Mauritanian workers will get salary increases every two years and a 39% cut in taxes on wages and salaries.

The 42% increase in the minimum wage is the result of months of negotiations involving the Mauritanian government, employers and unions.

However, the General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CGTM), one of the country’s largest unions, did not take part in the negotiations
