Mobile phone penetration rate rises in Rwanda

Mobile phone penetration rate in Rwanda has increased considerably over the past five years, from 6.2% in 2006 to 45.2% at the end of 2011, Rwanda’s National Statistical Institute (INSR) announced Wednesday.

Over the past five years, Rwanda has seen the number of new wireless telephone subscribers increase by 39 per cent, with the capital city of Kigali occupying the first position for the biggest number of mobile users, according to a report published by INSR.

As at 2011, the wireless sector recorded 4.8 million subscribers, reaching for the first time almost half of the population, estimated at 10, 537,222.

INSR research shows that around 70 per cent of cell phone penetration rate in Rwanda are in urban circles.

The local market is shared by three operators, namely MTN Rwanda, Tigo and Airtel.
