Nigeria to distribute energy-efficient bulbs

Nigeria’s federal government will commence the distribution of energy-efficient light bulbs in June to replace incandescent bulbs and save energy, according to Power Minister Barth Nnaji.

The local media, which Monday quoted the minister as announcing the plan at a forum in Enugu in the country’s South-east on Sunday, did not however give details of the planned distribution.

“We are going to inaugurate the Energy Efficiency Programme in this country in the next three weeks. The EEP means that we are going to get bulbs; energy efficient bulbs; and then take the energy inefficient bulbs from users and destroy them.

“The energy efficient bulbs are more expensive than your current bulbs, but you will be saving more than 80 per cent of your electricity,” the minister said.
