The number of mobile phone users has increased by 8.2% in Mauritius, growing from 92.8 in 2010 to 100.4 in 2011 per 100 inhabitants, according to statistics released over the weekend by Statistics Mauritius.
It indicated that mobile cellular subscriptions rose by 8.7% from 1,190,900 in 2010 to 1,294,100 in 2011.
Also on the rise is the number of internet subscriptions which increased by 30% from 284,200 in 2010 to 370,000 in 2011.
The number of internet subscriptions per 100 inhabitants was worked out to 28.7 in 2011, higher than the 2010 ratio of 22.1.
Regarding the ICT sector, Statistics Mauritius said the number of large establishments operating in this sector stood at 137 in 2011, providing jobs to about 13,200 people.
It added that in 2011, the value added at current prices generated by this sector rose by 12%.
