Outbreaks in schools due to high spread of Omicron (Louzir)

The emergence of COVID-19 outbreaks in schools is the result of the high spread of the new Omicron variant coupled with the low immunity of children, Hechmi Louzir, member of the scientific committee and chairman of the coronavirus vaccine committee said Monday.

Louzir told TAP the Ministry of Education shuts down classes or schools according to a specific protocol that help break the circle of transmission.

No serious cases have been recorded among children affected by Omicron, said Louzir.

The rate of vaccination among children aged between 12 and 15 years is still low, regretted Louzir. Nearly 52,000 children have been vaccinated, according to the latest statistics published on evax.

The scientific committee will discuss at its periodic meeting Tuesday the situation in schools and vaccination of children aged 12 to 15 and the type of vaccine to be administered, added Louzir.
