Saied announces dissolution of Supreme Judicial Council

President Kaïs Saïed announced the dissolution of the Supreme Judicial Council (French: CSM) “to put an end to the deplorable situation of justice”, saying a decree in this direction will be issued shortly.

“It is the right of Tunisians, and it is our right to dissolve the Supreme Judicial Council… This Council where positions are sold and where the judicial reshuffle is based on allegiances and not the law, “he said as he met on Saturday night at the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior, with Minister Taoufik Charfeddine and several senior ministry officials.

“The place of some of these judges is in the dock and not in the Council … We have sent them many warnings, and we will not let them make the people an easy prey and go so far as to take over the courts, “he said in a video of the meeting posted on the page of the Presidency of the Republic.

President Saied pointed out that that “Tunisians will, on Sunday, demand, on the commemoration of the assassination of martyr Chokri Belaid, that truth will be revealed… And they will demand the dissolution of the Supreme Judicial Council, because the case has remained for many years on the shelves of the courts, and it has been manipulated by judges who have no place in the courthouses except as defendants.

However, he stressed the respect due to “honorable judges who work within the law and apply the principle of equality before the law.»

In the same context, he called on Tunisians to demonstrate freely, but within the framework of the law, and to avoid any confrontation with the security forces,” saying they are «national forces that protect the demonstrators from any attempt to infiltrate by certain parties wishing to harm the people and the state.»

He added, “Tunisians have the right to demonstrate and to know the truth, and they also have the right to have a fair judicial system.”

Saied further indicated that “although the majority of judges respect the heavy responsibility of enforcing the law, and they are many, there are those who are complicit with the criminals, with supporting evidence.»

“We do not intervene in the judicial system and we have never done so, although the opportunity has arisen to prosecute criminals who know only insults, slander and collaboration with foreign parties to undermine the Tunisian state, “he further said.

Referring to the opponents of July 25, the President of the Republic said he was a strong supporter of the application of the law to all “contrary to their false accusations of dictatorship and authority that violates the law.” “I have respected the law, I have taken into consideration the rank of everyone, I am not afraid to defend what is right and I will not go back on my choices. There will be no turning back,” he said.
