Kairouan welcomes more than 700 thousand visitors on Mawlid Feast

The city of Kairouan welcomed more than 700,000 visitors and nearly a thousand tour buses from different regions of the country, the day before the celebration of the Mawlid Feast, commemorating the birth of Prophet Mohamed.

About 1.2 million people have flocked to the region since the start last Friday (October 15) of festivities marking the Mawlid Feast that will run until Tuesday, October 19.

The programme was rich and varied and included various religious and Sufi ceremonies, cultural, commercial and artistic events, Quran memorisation and recitation competitions and exhibitions dedicated to the Tunisian handicrafts, visitors told TAP correspondent.

The event was an opportunity to create a socio-economic dynamic in the region after a period of crisis resulting from the coronavirus pandemic that was behind the cancellation of last year’s festivities, said president of the association “Festival of the Mawled Feast in Kairouan” Ali Ben Said.

He added that this fourth edition of the festival, placed under the theme “Kairouan recovers,” was held in compliance with the health protocol.
