Tanzania: President Kikwete urges Japanese airlines to fly to Africa

If Japanese commercial airlines started regular flights to Tanzania or any other Africa country, holidaymakers from Southeast Asian countries could boost tourism on the continent, according to Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.

During discussion at the State House here with visiting Prince Akishino of Japan, the President remarked that many nationals of Southeast Asian countries and Japan failed to tour African countries due to lack of direct flights to link their capitals to Africa.

“Many tourists from Japan are unable to come to Africa because no Japanese airline flies between Japan and Africa,” President Kikwete said, calling on the Japanese private sector to step up industrial and business investments in his country.

During the talks, which lasted about 30 minutes, the President expressed his appreciation of various development projects undertaken in Tanzania with funding from the government of Japan.

“We appreciate your contribution to the development of Tanzania. If you visit different parts of our country you will see development projects which are implemented with assistance from Japan,” he told the Prince and his wife, Princess Akishono, who are on a private visit to Tanzania.
