Togo: Bridge construction starts on River Mono to link Togo, Benin

Togo and Benin are building a bridge on River Mono which borders the two countries, in a bid to facilitate trade between local residents, official sources here told PANA Thursday.

The proposed 145.45 metres long, 10 metres wide and 3.5 metres high bridge will link Agomey-Glozou village in the prefecture of Bas-Mono in Togo and Athiemey district in Benin.

Construction of the bridge started this week funded by both countries and supported by the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) to the tune of 8 billion F CFA. The work is planned to take about 18 months.

Small producers, especially women, from Togo and Benin cross River Bono every day to sell agricultural produce such as maize, vegetables, palm oil and cassava on either side of the river.
