Subsidy expenses used in smuggling are estimated at 400 million Tunisian dinars (MTD), reports the newspaper “Attounissia,” i.e. the quarter of the amounts allocated to the subsidy of basic products.
The same source said that 60% of subsidy expenditures are oriented towards the middle class and 9% to the lower classes, while 6% benefit the wealthy. 25% of the destination of these expenses remains unknown.
