Tunisia: around 1,100 MD collected by exchange offices (BCT)

Exchange offices authorized by the Central Bank of Tunisia (French: BCT) have collected nearly 1,100 million dinars (MD), the equivalent of 7 import days, until the end of October 2020, according to statistics from the BCT received by TAP.

These figures show the important role of the exchange offices particularly in fighting against the rise of the parallel exchange markets and their negative impact on the national economy.

Over the past few months, major results have been achieved in collecting foreign currency by these offices, bringing the amount collected from 447 million dinars in May 2020, to 1,100 MD at the end of October 2020, or 1% of GDP.

181 exchange offices have been authorized by the BCT to date. 141 of them are already operating and are based in more than 18 governorates. The first office came into operation in March 2019 in La Goulette.

The BCT indicated that the amounts of the collected currency will be destined to official channels so as to replenish the State’s currency reserves.
