Tunisia: domestic savings recover after a year of stagnation

After a year of stagnation, domestic savings rose by 5.3% in 2017, but this reflected a slight decrease in the savings rate, which went down from one year to the next from 9.4% to 9.2% of the GNDI, “says the annual report of the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) for the year 2017.

The increase in savings in 2017 reflected the improvement in economic growth, in addition to the contribution of the external sector, notably remittances of Tunisians abroad, which rose by 16.9% to at 4,574 MTD or 4.7% of GDP, the same statement said.

It should be noted that the level of savings, which is structurally low compared to the MENA average, is on a downward trend since 2011, reflecting, in particular, the impact of the gloomy economic conditions and the worsening financial imbalances on the behavior of different economic agents.
