Tunisia: EIB lends EUR 123 million for New Bizerte Bridge

The European Investment Bank (EIB), the EU’s financing institution, is confirming its financial support of EUR 123 million (around 416 million dinars) for the construction of the new Bizerte bridge in northern Tunisia, in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), which is providing EUR 122 million, and the Tunisian Government.

Since its launch in 2016, the project has been supported by the European Union with a grant of around 3 million euros (more than 10 million dinars) for feasibility studies and the project design phase.

This initiative aims to significantly improve the mobility and quality of life of the region’s inhabitants.

Strategically located between Lake Bizerte and the Mediterranean, this ambitious project aims to build a modern bridge 2.07 km long and 56 metres high, with a total budget of 750 million dinars (around 250 million euros).

The signing of the contract marks the start of the works, which are expected to take 38 months for the bridge and 27 months for the associated roads and interchanges.

This project is crucial for the city of Bizerte as it aims to divert traffic away from the city centre, reduce air pollution and ease traffic congestion.

The completion of this bridge is an important step towards the sustainable development of the region and preparing the future for new generations, reflecting the commitment of the EIB and the EU to support modern, sustainable infrastructure in Tunisia.

The construction contract was awarded to Sichuan Road and Bridge Group (SRBG), selected following an international tender, for a total of 610 million dinars, representing 79% of the total investment.

The work will be carried out in three phases: the creation of a southern link via a 4.5 km motorway, the construction of the main bridge and the creation of a northern link and a 2.5 km motorway.

This new structure, eagerly awaited by the people of Bizerte, will divert traffic away from the town centre and free up transit across the mobile bridge, which is currently used by more than 44,000 vehicles a day.

As well as alleviating traffic congestion, the project will support regional economic activity by facilitating access to the port of Bizerte and stimulating local development.

Marcus Cornaro, EU Ambassador to Tunisia, said: “We reaffirm our commitment to this strategic project, which will help improve the daily lives of the people of Bizerte and contribute to the economic development of the region. Through its contribution, the EU reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development alongside the Tunisian institutions and citizens.

“Beyond its remarkable technical aspects, this long-awaited bridge will ease traffic congestion in the centre of Bizerte and improve economic exchanges with the north-eastern region and the Algerian border,” said Jean-Luc Revéreault, Head of the EIB’s Representation in Tunisia. “This project reflects our commitment to sustainable solutions and a promising future for Tunisia’s citizens.”
