Tunisia expects over 22 million quintals of grain this season

Tunisia is on track to harvest more than 22 million quintals of grain this season, surpassing the 20 million quintals recorded last year. The harvesting campaign, which has already begun in several governorates, is gradually progressing across the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries has deployed a comprehensive logistical system to ensure the smooth conduct of harvesting, transportationand storage operations.

In terms of cultivated land, the sown area reached approximately 991,000 hectares, representing 87% of the initial target of 1.145 million hectares. These areas are distributed as follows:

533,000 hectares of durum wheat,

49,000 hectares of soft wheat,

400,000 hectares of barley,

9,000 hectares of triticale.

Most of these cultivated areas are concentrated in the northern governorates (834,000 hectares), with the remainder spread across central and southern regions.

A total of 2,750 combine harvesters are operational this season. Since May 2026, a calibration campaign targeting more than 1,300 machines has been underway to reduce harvest losses.

Grain collection will rely on a network of approximately 200 licensed collection centers, with a combined storage capacity of 8 million quintals. Requirements for baling twine have been estimated at 15,000 tons and including 4,500 tons for long straw and 10,500 tons for short straw.

For transportation, a mixed evacuation plan has been adopted, including:

60 standard-gauge railway wagons and 38 meter-gauge wagons serving the governorates of Béja, Jendouba and Bizerte;400 trucks contracted by the Grain Office;

9 vehicles operated directly by the Office for short-distance transport within Greater Tunis.

Fire prevention measures have also been implemented, including a weed-clearing program and the maintenance of access routes adjacent to grain farms.

Tunisia’s annual grain consumption stands at approximately 30 million quintals. The shortfall in soft wheat is covered through imports used for the production of flour and bread.
