Tunisia: exports in textile and clothing sector see 12.2% increase

Exports of the textile and clothing sector in the first half of this year recorded a growth of 12.20% in dinar, to TND 5,095.8 million, and 9.51% in euro compared to the same period of 2022, to €1,525.2 million, with an estimated coverage rate of 135%. These results exceeded the value of exports recorded in dinars and euros in the same period of 2019 (before the COVID pandemic) 24.13% (4105.3 million dinars) and 26.62% (1204.6 million euros), respectively.

Exports in June 2023 also went up by 6.45% and 3.08% in dinar and euro accounts respectively, to 883 million dinars and 263 million euros.

The value of trousers exports in the first half of this year recorded growth of 7.88% in dinar, reaching 1174.3 million dinars, and in euro 351.5 million euros, recording growth of 5.30% compared to the same period in 2022. The latter account for 27% of total exports of ready-made garments.

Countries of the European Union are the main destination for Tunisia’s ready-to-wear exports, particularly the French, Italian, German, Belgian, Portuguese and Dutch markets.

The value of ready-to-wear exports to the European Union in the first six months of 2023 amounted to approximately 1,225.8 million euros, recording growth of 13.22% compared with the same period in 2022.

This represents 80% of the sector’s total exports.

On the other hand, imports of ready-made garments from the local market decreased by 3.69% in value to 185.3 million dinars and by 0.93% in quantity to 21.6 thousand tons compared to the same period in 2022.
