Tunisia: fish production posts 3% increase in first half of 2012

Fish production posted a 3% growth in the first half of 2012, compared with the same period of 2011.

According to statistics from the Directorate General for Fisheries and Aquaculture in the Ministry of Agriculture, the production volume reached, about 54,453 tons to the end of June against 52,884 tons in the same period in 2011.

The same statistics show a stable fishing of blue fish with a 5% increase in deep sea fishing and 18% in coastal fishing.

Regarding aquaculture, production declined in the first half of this year, from 3,011 tons in 2011 to 2,594 tons in 2012, i.e. 417 tons less (14% decrease).

The volume of Tunisian exports of fishery products reached 11,782 tons in the first five months of 2012, or a value of about 126 MTD.

This volume was estimated in 2011 at 12,545 tons (123 MTD), i.e. down 763 tons (6%) in quantity compared with in 2012, and up 3 MDT (2%) in value.

On the import side, it had reached during the first 4 months of 2012, approximately 15,517 tons (44 MTD) against 15,223 tons in 2011 (same period), up 294 tons.
