Tunisia: Gas production up 3% and consumption +7%

Liquefied gas production (including output from the Gabes plant) increased by 3% to reach around 11,100 tons of oil equivalent.

Data published by the Energy Observatory up to the end of January 2026 show a 1% decline in dry commercial gas production compared to January 2025, at nearly 0.1 million tons of oil equivalent versus 0.11 million tonnes of oil equivalent during the same period in 2025.

This decrease is attributed to the continued decline in output from major fields and the absence of new drilling projects and discoveries.

Total royalty volumes also rose by 31% in January 2026, reaching 75,000 tons of oil equivalent compared to 57,000 tons of oil equivalent in the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, purchases of Algerian gas remained almost stable at around 243,000 tons of oil equivalent.

On the demand side, natural gas demand in January 2026 reached about 0.4 million tons of oil equivalent, marking a 7% increase year-on-year, while consumption of petroleum products rose by 6%.

The National Observatory of Energy and Mines noted in its January 2026 report that demand for natural gas used in electricity generation increased by 12%, accounting for around 46% of total demand.

Natural gas consumption in other sectors rose by 1% in January 2026 compared to January 2025, according to the report. Within petroleum products, gasoline consumption increased by 15%, while diesel consumption rose by 1%.
