Tunisia: GDP grows 2.4% in Q1 2022

Tunisia’s real gross domestic product, adjusted for seasonal variations and calendar effects, posted a year-on-year growth of 2.4% in the first quarter of 2022, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) announced on Monday.

Compared to the previous quarter, the economy grew by 0.7%, compared with the previous quarter. Converted into an annualized growth rate, the latter is in line with the economy’s growth regime in recent years, the INS pointed out.

While these data reflect a gradual recovery of activity, particularly in a context marked by increasing challenges, they nevertheless mask diverse sectoral profiles.

In fact, economic growth in the first quarter of 2022 benefited above all from the continued momentum towards normalization of activity in the mining sector and also from a perceptible improvement in the branches linked to industries with tourism characteristics.

While activity remains at a relatively moderate pace in the manufacturing industries and has declined in the construction sector.

On the other hand, the positive element in this trajectory is that, two years later, the level of real production at the beginning of 2022 finally reaches the level attained in the first quarter of 2020, just before the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
