Tunisia: Generics cover 60% of local needs

President of the Tunisian Association of Generic Medicines and expert with the World Health Organization (WHO), Kamel Idir, said that rationalizing the use of medicines is one of the key pillars of pharmaceutical policy.

He stressed that promoting generic and biosimilar medicines is a major challenge for the development of health systems worldwide, as it helps reduce costs and ensure equitable access to treatment, reports Mosaique FM.

Idir recalled that 60% of Tunisia’s medicine needs are covered by the national generics industry, launched in the 1990s.

However, he noted that this sector faces certain difficulties despite its therapeutic benefits, which are identical to those of original medicines.

In a context marked by supply disruptions, he called for a collective effort to provide Tunisians with the best medicines at the lowest cost.

To this end, the Tunisian Association of Generic Medicines has signed an agreement with the Faculty of Pharmacy to encourage the use of generics.
