This year’s citrus production is strong, with an estimated harvest of 265,000 tons, just 3% lower than last year, announced Imed Bey, President of the Regional Union of Agriculture and Fisheries of Nabeul Governorate.
Speaking to Express FM, he noted that the fruit size is smaller this year, about 35% smaller compared to last year when larger fruits dominated at 25%, though quality remains good.
He confirmed that various citrus varieties will be available in markets within 10 days, with prices expected to be similar to last year, and emphasized that producer prices are very reasonable.
Bey also highlighted the impact of climate change on fruit flavor, noting that citrus has become sweeter, a trend observed since last year.
He mentioned initial marketing difficulties, which have now been overcome, and also pointed to the Mediterranean fruit fly, which affected production at the farm level.
