Tunisia: industrial production down 3.6% in 8 months

Industrial production decreased by 4.3% in August 2019. This is mainly due to the drop in the energy sector (-6.4%), the mechanical and electrical industry sector (-5.6%), the textile, clothing and leather industry sector (-3.1%) and the petroleum refining sector (-72.8%).

Similarly, industrial production fell in the manufacturing and woodworking sector (-2.0%) and the paper, cardboard, publishing and printing industry sector (-2.0%).

On the other hand, industrial production rose in the agro-food industry (+ 0.8%), the chemical industry (+ 1.8%) and the electricity production and water distribution sector (+ 16.9%).

3.6% decrease in first eight months of 2019.

Industrial production decreased by 3.6% in the first eight months of 2019, compared to the same period in 2018.

This decrease is explained by the decline in production in the energy sector (-8.1%), the mechanical and electrical industries (-1.3%) and the textile, clothing and leather industries (-2.4%).

Similarly, production fell in the agri-food industry (-4.7%) following the decline in olive oil production at the beginning of the year and the oil refining sector (-66.6%).

In addition, industrial production recorded an increase in the chemical industry sector (+ 4.5%), the ceramic and glass building materials sector (+ 0.9%), the electricity and water production and distribution sector (+ 4.9%) and the mining sector (+ 8.8%) with 2,406 thousand tons during the first eight months of 2019 compared with 1935 thousand tons during the same period of 2018.
