Tunisia: inflation slightly rises to 4% in November

Tunisia’s inflation has increased to 4% in November 2016, from 3.9% in October, continuing its upward tendency recorded since the beginning of 2016, according to the last statistics released by the National Statistics Institute (INS) on Thursday.

This is due notably to the rise by 0.9% in transport group’s prices, in view of the increase by 2.4% in the prices of new cars, compared with last month.

It is also due to the 2.5% increase in prices of the food and beverages group, on a year-on-year basis, as the prices of fruits and dried fruits went up by 14.3% and those of edible oils and fish by 5.2% and 8.3%, respectively. However, meat prices have dropped by 2.6% year-on-year.

Prices of beverages went up by 2.7%, in view of the 3.7% rise in the prices of mineral water, soft drinks and juice.

Prices of the group alcoholic beverages and tobacco fell by 1.3%, year-on-year, following the decrease by 7.4% in the prices of alcoholic drinks and by 0.8% in those of tobacco.

Clothing and footwear group prices went up by 7.4% compared with November last year, due to the rise by 8.7% in prices of footwear, by 7.1% in clothing and 6.6% in accessories.

The index of the housing and domestic energy group increased by 5.8%, compared with the same period in 2015, in view of a rise by 15.5% in drinking water and sanitation prices after the recent rate increases last June.

Besides, the price index of renting, building materials and housing upkeep recorded a rise of 7.4% and 1.7%, respectively.

The price index of the furniture, equipment and domestic services group grew 4.3%, due to the increase by 6.4% in the prices of curtains and tapestries and by 6.3% in those of kitchen utensils.

Prices of the health group also went up by 3.1%, year-on-year, due to the rise by 5.4% in the prices of health services and by 2% in those of pharmaceutical products.
