Tunisia: inflation stabilizes at 6.2% in September

The inflation rate stabilized at 6.2% In September 2021, after falling by 0.2 points last month, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) announced Tuesday

This stability is mainly explained by the acceleration of the rate of increase in education prices (6.1% against 5.9%) and prices of products and services of leisure and culture (5.0% against 4.1%) but also by the deceleration observed in the rate of increase in food prices (7.2% against 7.4%), said the INS.

Increase in food inflation

Food prices increased by 7.2% year-on-year in September 2021, due to the rise in poultry prices by 24%, olive oils by 21.9%, fresh vegetables by 18.1%, eggs by 11.9% and fresh fish by 9.4%.

Beef and sheep meat prices fell by 4.3% and 2.2%, respectively, year-on-year.

Manufactured goods and services

Manufactured goods prices rose 7.2% due to price increases in pharmaceuticals by 8.6%, building materials by 12.6%, apparel products by 7.8%, and routine household products by 6%.

For services, prices rose 4.2% year-over-year due to price increases in restaurants, cafes and hotels services by 6.9%, health services by 6% and rents by 4.5%.

Core inflation and framed product inflation

The core inflation rate (excluding food and energy) rose to 6% from 5.9%, the previous month. Prices for free (non-administered) products rose 6%.
