Tunisia: MCC donates $8 million, 292 million others soon

Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), an independent U.S. Government foreign aid agency, Thursday donated eight million dollars (about 19.23 MTD) to fund projects as part of Tunisia Compact, five-year grants to encourage economic growth and reduce poverty.

This donation accounts for nearly 5% of a total amount of about 300 million dollars (721 MTD) that will be disbursed under this program under donations to consolidate Tunisia’s economic growth.

The grant agreement was inked in Tunis by Minister of Development, Investment and International Cooperation Zied Laâdhari and the representative of the US Ambassador to Tunisia Ben Moelling.

The agreement will help define Compact-funded projects to attain common goals of increased growth and curbed poverty, Moelling said.

These funds will enable working teams to carry out studies and preparatory works of infrastructure projects, conduct cost-benefit analysis of new project ideas and make environmental assessments.

Funding will also help identify key reforms to make investments in infrastructure more sustainable and promote private sector investments, in addition to developing budgets and action plans for the next Compact.

More than one year ago, the Board of Directors selected Tunisia as eligible to receive assistance.

This is an additional opportunity for Tunisia which reflects confidence in its potential to speed up growth and reduce regional disparities, Moelling said
