Tunisia most competitive African country in green value chains

Tunisia stands out as the most competitive country in Africa in green value chains, according to the Greenplexity Index.

Globally, Tunisia ranks 33rd out of 145 countries, with a score of 1.13. It gained 5 places compared to the previous edition, reflecting the progress made during the 2018-2023 period, the timeframe over which the index measures changes in competitiveness and countries’ ability to strengthen their presence in green value chains.

This performance is explained by the strength and specialization of its industrial clusters, concentrated in strategic sectors: electrical equipment and control systems (insulated electrical cables, transformers, fiberglass, and power converters), industrial engines and technical polymers, as well as synthetic fibers, and semi-finished metals, including aluminum plates and nickel bars.

The Greenplexity Index, developed by the think tank The Growth Lab, assesses the competitive presence of countries in green value chains.

It measures the breadth and complexity of the participation of 145 countries in the industries and products at the heart of the global energy transition, including green technologies, critical minerals, and essential inputs.

The index focuses on 145 countries, based on 2023 data, and analyzes two complementary dimensions: breadth and depth.

Breadth corresponds to the number and diversity of green products in which a country is competitive, while depth reflects the complexity and technological level of these products, indicating advanced know-how and sophisticated industrial capacity.

After Tunisia, comes Morocco, 58th globally, a country with emerging industries in green technologies and strategic metals. It is followed by Egypt (64th), Mauritius (67th), and South Africa (69th).

Conversely, some countries in the Maghreb and the continent remain far behind: Algeria ranks 103rd, while Libya is at 120th globally.

Globally, Japan occupies first place in terms of competitiveness in green value chains, thanks to the sophistication of its technologies and strategic industries. It is followed by Germany, the Czech Republic, France, and China, countries distinguished by the diversity and complexity of their industrial capacities and their technological know-how.
