Tunisia moves toward accrediting organic certifiers according to EU Standards

The National Accreditation Council (TUNAC) held a training session from November 6 to 12 on the European Regulation on Organic Farming (EU 2018/848), a key step toward accrediting certification bodies in this sector and boosting Tunisian exports.

Organized in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the training aimed to strengthen the skills of Tunisian officials and experts in evaluating and accrediting certifiers in line with European and international standards.

The goal, TUNAC noted on its Facebook page, is to enhance the competitiveness of Tunisian organic products in international markets.

The session brought together a group of experts and auditors accredited by the Council, alongside an international expert who guided the training activities.

At the conclusion of the session, participants praised the initiative as an important step in strengthening the national accreditation system.

They viewed it as a preparatory phase for Tunisia’s broader integration into the international accreditation system for the organic sector, opening new opportunities for Tunisian specialized institutions.

EU Regulation 2018/848, in effect since January 1, 2022, establishes the legal framework for organic production within the European Union. It aims to harmonize rules for production, processing, distribution, import, control, and labeling of organic products, supporting sustainable development, ensuring fair competition among European producers and reinforcing the contribution of organic farming to environmental and climate protection.
