Moez Ben Othman, President of the Bab Bhar Local Council, confirmed that demolition work on Hôtel du Lac in Tunis began on August 15 and is expected to continue for eight to nine months, before giving way to a new phase of reconstruction for a tourist facility.
In a statement to the national radio on Wednesday, August 20, Ben Othman explained that the hotel was in a catastrophic state and at risk of collapse, which required a judicial decision ordering its demolition to ensure urban safety.
He specified that the property belongs to private owners, and a private investor has submitted a new reconstruction project.
The company in charge of the work will preserve the architectural character close to the original appearance while adopting modern and contemporary designs.
He also revealed that the new hotel will initially provide around 435 direct jobs, helping to boost the local economy in the area.
