US: OIC to hold a conference on Darfur Development Bank

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) says it is reviewing all arrangements relating to the establishment of the Darfur Development Bank (DDB) in Sudan’s Darfur region and will soon host a conference to that effect.

In a statement obtained by PANA in New York on Thursday, the OIC said the decision to hold the conference followed a meeting between the OIC Secretary-General, Mr. Iyad Ameen Madani, and the Chairperson of Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) in Khartoum last Monday.

It said the meeting by both parties touched on this issue in light of the outcome of Darfur Donors’ Conference held in 2010 in Cairo with focus on the need for expeditious launching of DDB to contribute to the construction and reconstruction efforts and realization of development in Darfur.

It stated that the two sides agreed to hold a conference of the parties contributing to DDB at the OIC Secretariat in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, after the conclusion of all necessary procedures.

The statement noted that the OIC secretary-general was this week in Sudan on a three-day official visit in which he has held talks with the Sudanese leadership and officials, as well as with other non-governmental officials, and also visited the International University of Africa in
Khartoum.
