Tunisia: Non-resident bank profits fall sharply in 2021

According to the BCT’s Banking Supervision Department, 6 non-resident banks operating in Tunisia (and one authorized but not yet operational bank called LINC) earned a total of 64.112 million US dollars (MUSD) less in 2021 than in 2020, including 25.7 MUSD in interest, 24.9 MUSD in gains on portfolios and financial operations, 10 MUSD in commissions (up by one MUSD) and 3 MUSD in income from investment portfolios, down by almost 10 MUSD compared with the previous year.

On the other hand, expenses amounted to USD 4.2 million, an increase of almost USD 2 million compared to 2020, and net banking income amounted to almost USD 60 million, down USD 8 million.

Non-resident banks have also made significant provisions for 2021. In fact, provisions have risen sharply from USD 2.7 million in 2020 to just over USD 12 million in 2021. Their income tax has also increased.

Non-residents had to pay USD 11.285 million to the tax authorities, almost double the amount for 2020. And all this explains why their profits have fallen from USD 26,347 million to USD 19,290 million year-on-year.
