Tunisia: phosphate production falls sharply in June

The quantities of commercial phosphate produced by the Gafsa Phosphate Company (CPG) did not exceed 132,000 tons in the period from June 1 to 28, 2020, down 70% from the company’s estimate for this period (450,000 tons).

A decline in daily production of commercial phosphate was also recorded during the last weeks to 4500 tons/day against a daily average of 16,000 tons estimated by the company.

Central production manager Khaled Ouergui told TAP news agency production recorded from the beginning of 2020 has reached 2 million tons, below the targets set by the company, which expected a production of 2.8 million tons, down 28.6%.

The same source recalled that phosphate rail transport to the chemical group is totally interrupted in Metlaoui, Redeyef and Oum Larayes.

Road transport is also halted in El Ksar, he pointed out, adding activity was only carried out in the washing plants of Mdhila.

The stoppage of phosphate transport at several production units is due to social protests observed by job seekers in the region, according to the same source.
