Tunisia posts budget surplus of TND 1.3 billion in Q1

Tunisia’s budget balance showed a surplus of TND 1.3 billion at the end of the first three months of the current year, compared with a surplus of TND 1.4 billion at the end of March 2023.

According to the preliminary results of the execution of the State budget at the end of March 2024, budgetary resources amounted to TND 12 billion, compared with TND 10.7 billion at the same date last year, representing a growth of 12.8%.

This increase was mainly due to a 6.5% rise in tax revenues to TND 10.4 billion and a 20% rise in non-tax revenues to TND 1.1 billion.

Direct taxes increased by 14% to TND 4.4 billion at the end of March. Specifically, personal income tax rose by 8.3% to TND 3 billion, including 2.2 billion dinars from payroll taxes (+6.4%), while non-oil corporate tax revenues increased by 11.6% to TND 992 million.

Indirect taxes increased by 1.5% to TND 6 billion. This increase was mainly due to a 2.4% rise in customs duties to TND 449 million and a 1.3% rise in VAT to TND 2.5 billion.

On the other hand, excise duties decreased by 8.2% to TND 875 million. Total government expenditure stood at TND 10.2 billion at the end of March, compared to TND 9.2 billion a year earlier.

Budgetary expenditure consisted mainly of wages and salaries, which amounted to TND 5.3 billion (+2%), intervention expenditure of TND 2 billion (+22%), interest on debt of TND 1.8 billion (+35.4%) and investment expenditure of TND 630 million (-8.3%).
