Tunisia: production units of GCT plant in Mdhilla suspend activities

The three production units of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) plant in Mdhilla (Governorate of Gafsa) suspended their activities on Monday.

The regional director of the plant told TAP correspondent in the region that the shutdown is due to the exhaustion of dried phosphate reserves supplied to this plant by the Gafsa Phosphates Company (CPG).

The latter cannot provide supplies to the Mdhilla plant due to the continuation, in the area, of sit-ins and protests staged by jobless people and the strike of the phosphate products transport company.

The official added that the reserves of the plant in sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid for the production of Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) exceeded the storage capacity, which required a stoppage of work in these two production units.

The production capacity of the TSP is 1,350 tons per day, while annual exports of this product are estimated at 450,000 tons. The company has a thousand employees.
