The latest report by the Canadian think-tank Fraser Institute ranks Tunisia 117th in terms of economic freedom out of 159 countries.

The index published in Economic Freedom of the World measures the degree to which the policies and institutions of countries are supportive of economic freedom.

The cornerstones of economic freedom are personal choice, voluntary exchange, freedom to enter markets and compete, and security of the person and privately owned property.

Forty-two data points are used to construct a summary index and to measure the degree of economic freedom in five broad areas.

In the Maghreb, Tunisia is ahead of Morocco which occupies the 120th place and far exceeds Algeria which remains very late in the 156th place.

The Fraser Institute, which sees economic freedom as one of the most important conditions for prosperity, job creation and the fight against poverty, identified in its report 10 countries as champions of economic freedom.

Hong Kong is still in first place, with a score of 8.97 points, followed by Singapore (8.81 points), New Zealand (8.48 points), Switzerland (8.44), Ireland (8.19), United Kingdom (8.05), Mauritius (8.04), Georgia (8.01), Australia (7.99) and Estonia (7.95).

The report is based on statistical data collected in 2015 from a number of different sources (including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and others)
