Tunisia: social funds deficit worsens

Faced with the worsening of the social funds’ deficit, which has reac hed alarming proportions, social partners, government, union and employers’ organizations are initiating consultations to find a solution.

“The crisis of the social funds can be overcome only by the involvement of the social partners (UGTT, UTICA), MPs and the civil society,” Minister of Social Affairs, Mahmoud Ben Romdhane argued on Tuesday.
“All these players are called upon to find urgent solutions and to establish a new social insurance scheme to stem this crisis,” Ben Romdhane said at a consultation meeting held in Tunis.

Representative of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), Abdelkrim Jerad said “the exclusion of one of the social partners could disturb the development of social dialogue.”

According to official figures (2014), the deficit of the National Social Security Fund amounts to 222 MTD and that of the National Fund for Health Insurance (CNAM) stands at 132 MTD.
