Tunisia: Unemployment rises to 15.8% in Q3 2023

The number of unemployed stabilized during the third quarter of 2023, reaching 638.1 thousand people, according to data published on Tuesday 15 November 2023 by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Despite this stability, and due to the decline in the active population, the unemployment rate increased during this third quarter, reaching 15.8% (compared to 15.6% in the second quarter of this year and 15.3% in the third quarter of 2022).

The unemployment rate for males rose to 13.4% from 13.2% in the second quarter, while for females it reached 21.7% from 21.1% in the second quarter.

The unemployment rate for young people aged 15-24 rose to 39.1%, compared with 38.1% in the second quarter of this year and 37.8% in the third quarter of 2022. The rate is 39.3% for men and 38.6% for women in this age group.

For those with a tertiary education, the unemployment rate is 24.6% in the third quarter of 2023, compared with 23.7% in the second quarter and 24.3% in the third quarter of 2022. This rate is 14.4% for men and 32.9% for women in this category.

The INS points out that in the third quarter of 2023 the working population fell to 4.032 million, compared with 4.096 million in the second quarter of the current year.

The labor force is made up of 2.849 million men and 1.182 million women, representing 70.7% and 29.3% of the total respectively. This fall in the labor force in the third quarter of 2023 corresponds to a fall of 1.1 percentage points in the activity rate, which reached 45.2% of the working age population (aged 15+), compared to 46.3% in the previous quarter.
