Tunisia-USA: A Roadshow not like others!

The Tunisian-American Chamber of Commerce held Wednesday in Tunis, for the second time in Tunisia, the Roadshow on “Doing Business with the United States.”

The first, held in 2010, consisted of a set of seminars in Tunis, Sousse, Sfax and Bizerte to inform the public about possible partnership opportunities between businessmen of both countries.

It also seeks to inform entrepreneurs and the private sector mainly Tunisians of various aspects of trade with the United States, including how to access the U.S. market

According to Gordon Gray, U.S. ambassador in Tunis, it is essential to open new markets for Tunisian exporters. The priority is to address the economic challenges, although many factors, resulting from the international crisis, are not under their direct control.

He also stressed his country’s determination to support the economic recovery in Tunisia and realization of its ambitions in this area.

“The United States strongly supports the transition of Tunisia towards democracy and towards an open economic system governed by the rule of law. We believe that strengthening trade and economic integration between the U.S. and Tunisia to promote economic growth and employment is an important component of our support for this process. ”

”It is essential to ease exchanges, boost trade and investment especially for small and medium enterprises, reduce barriers to investment in key services, including services information technology and communications, financial services and services related to clean energy, strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights and promote the rule of law through increased transparency, including public participation in the development of regulation, and the fight against corruption.”

The diplomat spoke about the United States’ vision of the Tunisian political scene, saying his country is ready to work with the new democratically elected government. The Tunisian Revolution is the work of people who, by triggering it, have inspired the world and the American people, he said.

Today we all see how this revolution has spread to other countries, Egypt, Libya, Syria and elsewhere. President Barack Obama personally gets involved, and provides the necessary support, including economic development and promotion of the private sector, “he said.

For his part, the representative of FAMEX spoke about the position of Tunisia in the U.S. market. “Tunisia is the 89th customer of the United States, or, far from the position that we could achieve,” he said

”In the United States, there are a million restaurants, in other words a very large market for Tunisia, and as providers of expertise we are able to work with the United States in various fields, “he further said.

Khaled Souayah, representative of the Oil Exporter Company, spoke about the olive oil, a major Tunisian product exported to the United States. “Tunisia is the third largest supplier of olive oil for the United States. During the 2010/2011 season, we have exported some 4,200 tons of packaged olive oil worth 17 million dinars, “he notes.

The United States was the fifth largest trading partner of Tunisia for the year 2010. Between 2009 and 2010, the volume of bilateral trade (exports plus imports) rose by 18%. It had also trended upward throughout the previous decade.

Bilateral trade between the U.S. and Tunisia was estimated at $ 976 million in 2010, only the 96th trade relations of the United States.

Exports from the United States in Tunisia amounted to 571 million in 2010, while imports totaled $ 406 million.

The main products exported by the United States from Tunisia are cereal grains, fruits, grain, equipment, fats and oils.

Tunisia exports from the United States mainly mineral fuel, fats and oils, woven apparel, electrical equipment and precious stones.

Direct investment of the United States in Tunisia reached 220 million in 2009, the latest year for which data are available.
