Tunisian airports: A record number of passengers in 2024!

Air passenger traffic through Tunisian airports increased by 9.4% in 2024 compared to 2023. It reached 9,646,949 passengers, a record since the creation of the Office of Civil Aviation and Airports (OACA).

According to statistics published by the office on Saturday evening, this upward trend affected air traffic at most Tunisian airports, with a record being set at Tunis-Carthage International Airport, which welcomed 7,249,701 passengers in 2024, an increase of 8.8% on the previous year.

Djerba-Zarzis International Airport recorded an increase of 12.8% (2,203,957 passengers), while Tozeur-Nafta Airport posted a rise of 76.5% (32,108 passengers).

Tabarka-Ain Draham International Airport recorded an increase of 1.6% (2 679 passengers).

Only Sfax-Thyna airport saw a growth of 10.1% (157350 passengers).

OACA statistics also show a 4.9% increase in commercial traffic “aircraft movements” in 2024 compared to 2023, with 79,155 aircraft movements recorded.

In terms of aircraft movements, the increase was 4.7% for Tunis-Carthage International Airport (58,690 movements), 8.6% for Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (16,339 movements) and 36.3% for Tozeur-Nafta International Airport (462 movements).

Aircraft movements also increased by 6.4% at Tabarka-Ain Drahem International Airport (183 movements). However, the number of movements at Sfax airport fell by 6.2% (3,473 movements).

Overflights (aircraft crossing Tunisian airspace) reached 61,617 in 2024, an increase of 14.7% compared with 2023.

The airports operated by OACA and TAV Tunisia posted a rise of 12.9% compared with 2023 (12,538,053 passengers).

Tunisair: Slight increase in turnover

Between January and June 2024, the number of passengers carried went up by 2% to 1,173,948 compared with 1,151,193 in 2023.

Tunisair’s turnover increased by 2.6% between 2023 and 2024 (1st half) to 694.536 million dinars, according to the national airline’s quarterly activity indicators.

From January to June 2024, the number of passengers carried rose by 2% to 1,173,948 compared with 1,151,193 in 2023. However, the average revenue per passenger (scheduled) decreased by 0.4%, from 462 dinars in the first half of 2024 to 460 dinars in the same period of the previous year.

The load factor dropped by 2.9 points to 71.1% in 2024 (H1) compared to 74% in 2023 (H2).

In addition, the indicators show an improvement in punctuality (less than 15 minutes) of 11 points to 50% in June 2024, compared with 39% in June 2023.

With regard to the evolution of costs between the second half of 2023 and the second half of 2024, the indicators published by Tunisair show an increase of 8.2% in fuel costs, from TND 194,710 million to TND 210,759 million, due to a 7.2% increase in consumption and a 2.5% increase in the price of a barrel of oil.

Similarly, personnel costs increased by 5.8% due to statutory salary increases, rising from TND 97,406 million 2023 to TND 103,018 million in 2024.

Financial costs increased from TND 26,350 million in the second half of 2023 to TND 24,389 million in the same period of 2024. Indebtedness decreases to TND 720,374 million after the payment of the contractual installments. Finally, Tunisair will have 34 aircraft in operation until June 2024.
