Unemployment decreases 0.6% in Q2

Tunisia’s unemployment rate recorded a slight increase of 0.6% from 16.5% in the first quarter of 2013 to 15.9% in the second quarter, according to a recent newsletter of the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Some 628.4 thousand people are jobless out of an active population of 3,943.7 thousands, the INS also revealed in a national population and employment survey (second quarter of 2013).

The number of the employed population reached 3,315,300 in the second quarter of 2013, including 2,482,400 men and 832,900 women, said the INS.

Comparing these figures with those of the first quarter 2013, net job creation among men amounted to 16,400 against 17,700 jobs for women.

According to the survey of the INS, the unemployment rate is estimated in the second quarter of 2013 to 13.3% among men and 23% among women, against 13.9% (for men) and 23.3% (for women) in the first quarter of 2013.

On unemployed higher graduates, the INS puts their number at 218,200 in the

second quarter of 2013, i.e. a rate of unemployment of 31.6%.

20.9% of these unemployed graduates are men and 43.5% are women.
