Unemployment rate up in Mauritius

Mauritius’ central statistics bureau has revealed that unemployment rate in the island stood at 9.2% in the first quarter of the year, against 9.1% in the same period last year.

In its latest report issued here Monday September 24th, the bureau revealed Mauritius had 49, 500 jobless people, comprising 19, 800 men and 29, 700 women, in the second quarter of 2007, compared with 53, 800 jobless unemployed people (20, 700 men and 33, 100 women) in the same period in 2006.

Some 502, 100 people were employed during the reviewed period, against 493, 400 in the same period last year.

Analysing further, the bureau said 44% of jobless people were aged below 25, with the average age for men at 27 years and for women at 31.

According to the same source, most jobless people, or 55%, are single, 37% married and the rest (8%) separated from their partners.

The bureau also said despite the high number of jobless people in the island, an increasing number of foreign workers, mainly Chinese and Indians, were working in the textile and clothing industries as well as the building sector.
