Borrell calls for return to normal functioning of state institutions in Tunisia

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on Tuesday that the Tunisian Parliament “cannot remain closed indefinitely.

“It is crucial for the future of the country and for its domestic and international credibility that the president and the Tunisian authorities at all levels fully restore the constitutional and institutional order, including the activities of the Parliament,” he said before the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy was speaking during a plenary session of the European Parliament. Several points, including the situation in Tunisia, are on the agenda for debate.

On Monday, Josep Borrell said during a press conference at the end of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Affairs, to be, once again, discussed with President Saïed.

He said he stressed during the meeting, “the importance of preserving the achievements of democracy,” respecting the principle of separation of powers and ensuring a return to the normal functioning of state institutions.

According to him, a clear schedule is now necessary to restore the constitutional provisions. “We will closely monitor the impact of the decisions, in the light of concrete facts,” he said.

The plenary session of the European Parliament is held from October 18 to 21 in Strasbourg.

A resolution of the European Parliament on the situation in Tunisia will be voted on Thursday, according to the European Union.
