Botswana: inflation rises but remains with central bank target

Statistic Botswana (SB) said on Monday the August inflation rate stood at 4.6 per cent, an increase of 0.1 of a percentage point on the July rate of 4.5 per cent.

The data authority further said the annual inflation in August 2014 was lower than the 5.6 per cent recorded during the same month last year.

“The downward movement of annual inflation rate, between August 2013 and August 2014, is attributed to the steady prices of commodities, especially the main components of transport and food and non-alcoholic beverages which dropped by 5.5 and 1.8 percentage points respectively,” said SB.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Botswana’s (BoB) 2014 monetary policy indicate that domestic inflation is projected to remain within the objective range of 3-6 percent in 2014 and into the medium term.
