Burundi gains sharp increase in tax revenue

Burundi received tax revenues estimated at US$ 123 million in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 23 per cent, compared to the figures recorded in 2010, official sources said in Bujumbura.

Tax revenues originally scheduled for this period were about US$ 100 million.

Two years ago, with the aim of improving tax revenue, the Burundian government created the Burundi revenue office (OBR), one of the few public services led by an expatriate of British origin in the country.

Recruited through competitive examination, the head of the OBD’s main mission is to fight fraud and tax evasion
