Car import rises 27%, with Asian brands on the top

Some 49,514 vehicles of various types have been marketed by the various dealers in Tunisia during the first 10 months of 2021, against 39,024 vehicles during the same period last year, up 27%.

According to the National Chamber of Car Dealers and Manufacturers, 3 Asian brands have occupied the top ranks. Meanwhile 5 other brands also Asian have submitted to the Ministry of Trade requests for authorization to export cars to Tunisia.

During the same period (at the end of October 2021), 7571 four-horsepower cars were marketed against 5854 during the first 10 months of 2020, according to the same source.

The Chamber works in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Customs to reduce taxes on imports of 5-horsepower cars to bring their prices closer to those of the low-cost cars (4 horsepower)

In this regard, the price difference between the two types of vehicle is about 15 thousand dinars.

In addition, a reduction in the price of hybrid cars (using fuel and electricity) is planned in the Finance Act of 2022 and should reach 50%. The adoption of this measure is likely to encourage the marketing of eco-friendly cars in Tunisia and should allow to gradually reduce the price of fuel, especially since this kind of car consumes less hydrocarbons.

As for electric cars, their consumption requires the establishment of the necessary infrastructure including charging stations.

In this regard, the chamber is leading a project in this area, in collaboration with the National Agency for Energy Management, according to the same source.
