Check almost put away in accessory drawer as bill of exchange “moves upmarket”!

The number of bill of exchange transactions rose 161% to 4.6 million operations, amounting to TND 54,226.9 million (+59.7%) by the end of December 2025 compared to 2024, according to the “Payments in Figures in Tunisia” bulletin published by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

The BCT also reported a 67.5% drop in check transactions, totaling 7.9 million operations for TND 53,477.1 million, down 58.8%.

The rejection rate for bills of exchange and checks stood at 10% and 1.9% in number, and 8.8% and 3.3% in value, respectively, by the end of December 2025.

Regarding telecompensated payment methods, transactions via direct debits increased 21.4% to 8.2 million operations for a value of TND 30,693.6 million (+22%), with a rejection rate of 48.2% in number and 6.6% in value.

Transfers rose 11.1% in number to 38.5 million operations, mobilizing TND 79,590.6 million (+42.3%), with a 0.1% rejection rate in both number and value.

Approximately 164.8 million card transactions were made in Tunisia by the end of December 2025, totaling TND 29,498 million, up 8.9% in number and 12.3% in value compared to 2024. Withdrawals accounted for 60%, while payments made up 40%.

The number of bank cards increased 6.6% to 5.851 million cards by the end of December 2025, while the number of ATMs and bank automatic counters (DAB/GAB) slightly decreased 0.2% to 3,300 units.

Mobile payments soar 81%

Mobile payment transactions rose 81% to 8.4 million transactions, valued at TND 1,769 million (+59%) by year-end 2025.

For e-payments, the BCT reported a 19% increase in number to 19.3 million operations and a 31% increase in value to TND 1,375 million.

Currently, Tunisia has 1,005 active merchant sites (-10% from 2024) and 43,000 POS terminals (+10%). Proximity payments increased 17% in number to 46.8 million operations and 20.3% in value to TND 5,978.4 million.

By the end of 2025, the Elyssa-RTGS Real-Time Gross Settlement System, managed by the Central Bank and used for interbank, Treasury, and monetary policy operations, as well as for clearing balances from external systems (SIBTEL, SMT, Tunisie Clearing, and TSE’s Market Guarantee Fund), processed 435,815 transactions valued at TND 6,153.6 billion, up 18.2% in number and 36% in value compared to 2024.
