Congo: Pres. Zuma arrives in Congo

South African President Jacob Zuma has arrived in Brazzaville to attend the celebrations marking the 25th Anniversary of the Signature of the Brazzaville Protocol on Peace in Southern Africa.

President Zuma, who arrived in the Congolese capital Tuesday morning, was welcomed by his Congolese counterpart, Denis Sassou Nguesso.

After a long negotiation process, the Protocol on Peace in Southern Africa was signed on 13 Dec. 1988, by South Africa, Angola and Cuba, under the mediation of the US and in the presence of President Nguesso.

This Protocol resulted in the signing of a Peace Agreement in Southern Africa on 22 Dec. 1988 in New York, US, and paved the way to the withdrawal of Cuban and South African troops from Angola, to the implementation of Resolution 435 on Southern Africa and the independence of Namibia.

The Protocol also helped to end apartheid in South Africa.
