Congo, SA to sign maritime cooperation agreement

Congo and South Africa will sign a maritime agreement at the meeting of their joint cooperation commission in May, South Africa’s Ambassador to Congo, Welsch Makanda, said here Tuesday.

Speaking at the end of talks with Martin Parfait Aime Coussoud Mavoungou, Congo’s Minister of Maritime Transport and Merchant Marine, the South African diplomat said the agreement would enable the sharing of experience between the two countries in the area of maritime personnel training, ship inspection and maritime safety.

Makanda said the agreement would open a new era in cooperation between the two countries which “are on strategic locations on the western coast of Africa”.

Congo and South Africa initiated a maritime agreement project in 2005 and the final phase started the following year in Johannesburg.
